Minmei Madelynne Pryor Went into the Dryer is the first series in an ongoing project by up and coming artist Tyler Bright Hilton. Each sequence features visual narratives about the fictional character Minmei Madelynne Pryor, and this first series is a ‘coming-of-age’ story that explores how fantasy, privacy and the influence of others are all contributing factors to identity development.
Hilton uses the Minmei series as a way of bringing together personal interests and influences. Beyond the obvious association with Alice in Wonderland, other references include the late print work of Goya, T’ang Dynasty sculpture, the 1980’s anime Robotech, Terry Richardson’s photography and Winsor McCay’s pioneering comic strip from the early 1900’s Little Nemo in Slumberland.
Minmei Madelynne Pryor Went into the Dryer consists of 20 images in total (eight of which are shown here), each with a full title that acts as a written narrative alongside the image. The full titles of the eight works form the series featured here can be seen at the end of this text.
Born in Toronto 1979, Hilton has a degree in classical animation, a BFA from the Ontario College of Art and Design and this year he gained his MFA from Chelsea College of Art and Design. Between 2006 and 2008 he has had four solo shows in Toronto and his work has been included in group exhibitions in London, Toronto, Florence and Miami.
’Minmei Madelynne Pryor Went into the Dryer’ was selected for this year’s New Contemporaries and features in the exhibition that is part of the Liverpool Biennale before moving to London in December 2008.
Hilton currently lives and works in London.
