Simon Parish’s hyper-real paintings present us with an alternative view of the city.
Parish’s highly detailed oil works cleverly redefine the mundane underbelly of the urban experience. Ignoring the tourist hotspots, Parish gives us edges of cities, flyovers, suburbs and office blocks, rendering these hackneyed items of city-scape in an innovative, alluring light.
Parish’s work reveals these areas as both beautiful and promising, navigating everyday scenes, while purposefully questioning the real aesthetic experience of the city.
Simon Parish is an MFA graduate of Slade School of Art and has been artist in residence at Durham Cathedral.
