Often working to a narrative with symbols gathered over many years Ian Wilkinson is constantly trying to depict emotions and situations which are either personal or observational. With surface playing a key roll in Wilkinson’s work print provided the perfect medium to translate the artists interests into an intelligent body of work.
Wilkinson is highly aware of his engagement with his work and the various processes it goes through, from the moment of conception relationships are in constant flux between the work and the viewer. The artist states: “The work is constantly evolving as new textures and symbols are acquired and juxtaposed. I do not profess to fully understand all the intricacies of my work as this would eliminate two elements of utmost importance; spontaneity and mystery”.
The artist describes his individual pieces as integral to each other, where subliminal actions from previous work can, and often influence subsequent work, and so it continues, some symbols gain greater strength, others take on dual meanings and a few become antithetical.
Ian Wilkinson graduated from North Staffordshire Polytechnic with a 1st Class Hons in Fine Art printmaking in 1983. He has since opened his own successful print studio and continues to show his own work in numerous exhibitions including the Affordable Art Fair 2004 & 2005, Peter Gwyther Gallery, London and his solo show at The Wall Gallery, Ely.
